Lady Blazers hope for state

Sydney Turner

The Blazer soccer program has grown dramatically over the past few years. With the boys winning state in 2013 and the girls in 2014, both teams have high hopes for their upcoming season.

For off season, both teams participated on a fall team in order to keep up their foot skills. Not everyone was able to play on this team due to other sports, but it allowed a good amount of extra practice for those who were able to partake.

The soccer teams started their season with a few scrimmage games on Februray 28 in Bryant. But, because of the weather, their first game was this past Tuesday against Little Rock Christain. The girls were defeated 2-0, but the boys pulled away with a 2-1 win. LRC was not a conference game, but they are 5A, so the Blazers are likely to see them again at the state tournament. This game allowed the teams to play good competiton early on in their season.

Their second game was against Jonesboro High School. Even though JHS is not conference nor are they 5A, they still like to play them for some friendly hometown rivalry. The girls managed a 6-0 win, but the boys came up short with a 2-1 loss.

Both teams are heading to Harrison this weekend to play in the Goblin Tournament. This is just the beginning for these teams, so come out and watch a game to support your Blazer soccer program.

This year the track team steps up into the world of 5A competition. With a new coach to guide them through this season the Lady Blazers are pumped & ready to run. While the thought of going up against entirely different opponents at meets is nerve wracking, the Lady Blazers fear not. With one returning senior, three juniors, and four sophomores, the dream team is still in action. Junior Katie Joiner will return this year to pole vault, 100 meter dash, and be apart of the 4x1 team. Sophomore Canaan Richardson will add to the 4x1 and also participate in high jump. Returning senior Josie Wicker will continue running hurdles and running the 4x1 also. This season will be one of the toughest yet. The Lady Blazers are prepared for the season. The first meet will be held the week after spring break.

The Lady Blazers softball team started off their season this month. The first home game was March 12. This season is the last for seniors Ryleigh Harrison, Destiny Ransone, Abby McNatt, and Faith Allen. "It's going to be really bittersweet for us four seniors. It's going to be our last time playing together as Blazers," Ryleigh Harrison says of her last season with her teammates. The team hopes to make it to the state tournament since they recently moved up to 5A. The last home game for them will be May 5th. Go out and support our softball girls!
